Rising Cases of Pancreatic Cancer in India: The Crucial Need for Early Detection
Pancreatic cancer is becoming increasingly prevalent in India, prompting medical experts to highlight the urgency of early detection. With the majority of cases diagnosed at advanced stages, treatment becomes more difficult, leading to lower survival rates.
“Nearly 80% of pancreatic cancer cases are diagnosed at advanced stages,” notes Dr. ABC, an oncology expert. “At this point, the disease has often spread, significantly limiting treatment options.”
The insidious nature of pancreatic cancer contributes to this late detection. It is often referred to as a "silent disease" because its early symptoms are subtle and easily mistaken for routine health issues. Symptoms like abdominal discomfort, back pain, unexplained weight loss, and jaundice frequently go unnoticed or unreported until the cancer has advanced.
“Early symptoms are so mild that most patients do not suspect anything serious,” explains Dr. ABC. “By the time they seek medical help, the disease has usually progressed significantly.”
Recognizing Symptoms
Symptoms that may signal pancreatic cancer include:
- Persistent abdominal or back pain
- Unexplained weight loss
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
- Loss of appetite and nausea, especially after meals
Although these symptoms are not exclusive to pancreatic cancer, individuals experiencing them persistently, particularly those at higher risk, should consult a doctor.
Types of Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer primarily exists in two forms:
- Adenocarcinoma, the more common type, accounting for 95% of cases, which originates in the pancreatic ducts.
- Neuroendocrine tumors, which are rarer and typically grow more slowly.
“Understanding the type of pancreatic cancer is crucial as each behaves differently,” says Dr. ABC. “However, early diagnosis is key for both types.”
The Call for Awareness
Early detection hinges on awareness. Persistent symptoms like dull abdominal pain radiating to the back, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss should not be ignored.
“We urge everyone to be vigilant about their health,” emphasizes Dr. ABC. “If you notice persistent symptoms, seek medical advice promptly. Early intervention could save lives.”
Although pancreatic cancer remains a challenge to diagnose early, heightened awareness and timely consultations can lead to earlier detection, offering patients better treatment options and outcomes.
