Samsung Unveils ‘Good Sleep’ Mode for WindFree Air Conditioners

GURUGRAM: Samsung has introduced an innovative ‘Good Sleep’ mode for its WindFree™ air conditioners, designed to enhance sleep quality by adjusting the indoor temperature based on different sleep stages. The feature now integrates with the Galaxy Watch series, enabling automatic activation when users fall asleep.

Studies emphasize the crucial role ambient temperature plays in sleep quality. Many wake up at night feeling too hot or cold, disrupting their rest. Addressing this issue, Samsung collaborated with Kyunghee University in 2015 to identify optimal temperatures for each sleep stage, creating an algorithm that dynamically adjusts the air conditioner settings.

The ‘Good Sleep’ mode adapts the temperature through the five stages of sleep: wake, REM, and three NREM stages. For instance, the air conditioner quickly lowers the temperature within five minutes of sleep onset, maintaining a cooler environment during deeper sleep phases. It then gradually increases the temperature in the later stages to prevent discomfort caused by excessive cold.

Throughout an eight-hour sleep cycle, which typically includes four to six repetitions of these stages, the mode adjusts the temperature three times. In WindFree™ models, cool air is distributed gently for a comfortable sleeping environment.

By connecting with the Galaxy Watch series, users can enable automatic operation without manual adjustments. The AI detects sleep via the watch and adjusts the air conditioner settings accordingly. It also syncs with wake-up alarms, ensuring the unit powers off or adapts to optimal temperatures for waking hours.
