Birla Opus Paints Inaugurates Fourth Factory in Karnataka, Becomes Second-Largest by Capacity
Aditya Birla Group Chairman, Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla, unveiled Birla Opus Paints' fourth manufacturing facility in Chamarajnagar, Karnataka, marking a significant milestone in the company’s journey. The fully automated plant has commenced operations, increasing the company’s production capacity to 866 million litres per annum (MLPA) and positioning it as the second-largest player in the decorative paints industry by installed capacity.
Speaking at the inauguration, Mr. Birla emphasized the company’s ambitions to redefine the Indian paints industry. “Our paints business reflects the aspirations of a bold and confident India. This new facility is integral to our strategy of addressing the growing demand in the southern region. We aim to achieve a revenue target of ₹10,000 crore within three years of full-scale operations,” he said.
The Chamarajnagar plant, with a capacity of 230 MLPA, will produce water-based, enamel, and wood-finish paints. Advanced technology, including in-house emulsion and resin synthesis, enables innovative features such as stain resistance, high durability, and superior gloss. Fully sustainable, the plant operates with zero liquid discharge and incorporates 4th-generation manufacturing systems for enhanced supply chain efficiency.
Birla Opus Paints is executing a phased expansion plan with six manufacturing facilities at an investment of ₹10,000 crore. Four plants are now operational—Panipat, Ludhiana, Cheyyar, and Chamarajnagar—with a combined capacity of 866 MLPA. Trial production at the Mahad facility near Pune has begun, while the Kharagpur plant is progressing as scheduled.
Currently, the company offers 129 products across 900 SKUs, with plans to expand to 145+ products and 1,200 SKUs, including exclusive offerings like Indian PU Wood Finish. Its products are available in over 4,300 towns nationwide, with robust growth in smaller towns and rural markets.
The company also announced the pilot launch of its franchise-led painting service, "PaintCraft Partner," complementing its direct services. Its latest advertising campaign, Naye Zamane Ka Naya Paint, highlights innovative features like scuff resistance, dirt pickup technology, and long-term warranties, continuing the momentum from its memorable launch campaign, Duniya Ko Rang Do.Mr. Himanshu Kapania, Director of the Aditya Birla Group, described the inauguration of the Chamarajnagar plant as a key milestone in the company’s growth journey. CEO Rakshit Hargave reinforced the company’s commitment to cutting-edge R&D and ESG goals, promising superior quality and differentiation in the competitive paints market.
