The Almond Board of California hosted an engaging session titled "A Handful of Almonds a Day: Natural Approach to Supporting Health in Today's Fast-Paced Lifestyle" at the Taj Deccan in Hyderabad. The event featured an esteemed panel, including Nutrition and Wellness Consultant Sheela Krishnaswamy, actress Vani Bhojan, and RJ Prateeka, who stressed the importance of mindful dietary choices in maintaining overall health and well-being.
The panel delved into the challenges of modern lifestyles, which often lead to the prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), lifestyle-related illnesses claim six million lives annually in India, with chronic conditions projected to cost the country $6 trillion by 2030.
Krishnaswamy emphasized the role of a balanced diet and natural foods like almonds in combating these health challenges. "Almonds are packed with 15 essential nutrients and provide numerous health benefits, including blood sugar control, weight management, and reduced cholesterol levels," she noted. Referring to the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN) guidelines, she urged the inclusion of nuts like almonds as a vital source of plant protein in a balanced diet.
Actress Vani Bhojan shared her personal approach to staying healthy amid a demanding work schedule, highlighting the importance of nutrient-dense foods, meal planning, and practices like yoga and meditation. "Almonds have been a game-changer for me," she said, crediting the habit to her mother. "They help curb unhealthy snacking, boost my energy levels, and even improve my skin health—essential for my profession."
Krishnaswamy reinforced the message, adding, "Many struggle with lifestyle diseases due to erratic routines. Natural foods like almonds are crucial for managing weight, controlling blood sugar, and promoting heart health. Making mindful dietary choices is key to maintaining health in a hectic world."
