"Don’t generalize," says DGP in response to increasing suicides among Telangana police officers.

"The rise in suicides could be due to various factors such as financial, family, emotional, and personal issues. I can't pinpoint a single cause," the top cop stated.

"Don’t generalize," says DGP in response to increasing suicides among Telangana police officers.

Telangana's Director General of Police (DGP) Dr. Jitendra addressed the rising number of suicides among police personnel on Sunday, December 29, suggesting that multiple factors could be behind these tragic incidents. He disagreed with the notion that work pressure was the sole cause of the suicides.

"There may be various reasons such as financial, family, emotional, and personal issues. I can't say it's happening because of just one factor. We can’t generalize it as work pressure. While work pressure could be a factor in some cases, I am not saying it’s the only reason," Dr. Jitendra stated while speaking to the media at the Telangana Police Headquarters in Hyderabad.

He also highlighted that Telangana Police have an internal support system to address work-related concerns. The department offers counseling services to officers dealing with family, emotional, and financial difficulties. "If we are unable to resolve issues at the department level, we involve professional counselors," he added, emphasizing that the police department is well-equipped to handle employee issues.

The DGP's remarks came in the wake of an increasing number of suicides among Telangana police officers.

On Sunday, a 52-year-old head constable, Sai Kumar, was found hanging from a tree at the Kulcharam Police Station in Medak district. Reports suggest that Kumar had a cup of tea before taking his life. His body was sent to a government hospital in Medak for postmortem.

In a separate incident, 38-year-old constable Pandari Balakrishna, stationed with the Telangana Special Police (TGSP) in Siddipet, died by suicide on December 27 after hanging himself in his home. Prior to his death, he and his wife poisoned their two children, Yashwant (11) and Ashrith (9). Balakrishna's wife also consumed the poison, but neighbors rushed her and the children to the hospital. They are currently receiving treatment. The reasons for his drastic decision are under investigation by the Siddipet police.

Earlier in November, 42-year-old traffic police constable Kankuri Ravishankar, who worked in Nalgonda, died by suicide. He had taken leave for Deepavali and was at home in Cheruvugattu village when the incident occurred. Ravishankar is survived by his wife, Swathi, a bus conductor with the RTC, his mother, Venkatamma, and two children.
