The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), supported by Netflix, has revealed its 2024 Breakthrough cohort, which includes nine emerging talents from India in the fields of film, television, and games. The global initiative, now in its 11th year, aims to discover and nurture promising creative professionals, providing them with unparalleled opportunities for professional growth and global networking.

The nine Indian participants were chosen by a distinguished jury of industry experts, including Guneet Monga Kapoor (Producer and Founder of Sikhya Entertainment), Monika Shergill (Vice President of Content at Netflix India), and filmmakers like Rajiv Menon and Shonali Bose. The chosen talents represent a diverse range of roles, from game producers to filmmakers, writers, and sound designers. The full list includes:

  1. Abhinav Chokhavatia | Game Producer - Down and Out
  2. Christo Tomy | Director - Curry and Cyanide: The Jolly Joseph Case
  3. Deepa Bhatia | Writer/Director/Producer - First Act
  4. Dhiman Karmakar | Sound Designer - Amar Singh Chamkila
  5. Jaydeep Sarkar | Showrunner/Executive Producer - Rainbow Rishta
  6. Monisha Thyagarajan | Series Producer - The Hunt For Veerappan
  7. Neeraj Kumar | Producer/Lead Developer - Artifice: War Tactics
  8. Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy | Writer/Director - Aachar & Co
  9. Varun Grover | Writer/Director - All India Rank

The Breakthrough program offers its participants professional development, global exposure, and the chance to engage with BAFTA’s extensive network of over 12,000 industry members. Participants also gain access to BAFTA events, screenings, and voting membership in the Academy’s prestigious awards.

Jane Millichip, BAFTA’s CEO, expressed excitement about the program’s impact, while Monika Shergill of Netflix India highlighted the importance of supporting India’s thriving creative industry. This year’s cohort follows in the footsteps of previous Breakthroughs who have gone on to become industry leaders and BAFTA nominees.
