Telangana Man Sentenced to Life in Kuwait; Wife Alleges False Charges, Seeks Help
Anwari Begum, the wife of Mohammad Abdul Sohail, a 34-year-old man from Telangana who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Kuwait, has appealed to the Minister of External Affairs (MEA), Dr. S. Jaishankar, for legal assistance.
Sohail, a native of Bodhan in Nizamabad district, was employed as a plumber in the maintenance department of Gulf Engineering Company at Adan Hospital in Kuwait. He was arrested on December 5, 2021, after being accused of involvement in a drug-related case.
According to Anwari Begum, the arrest was a result of a misunderstanding. She explained that Sohail, who frequently worked long shifts, had stopped at a hotel for lunch when an unknown person handed him a suspicious parcel. Shortly after, the police arrived and took him into custody.
The case gained public attention after Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) leader Amjed Ullah Khan shared a letter written by Begum to the government, highlighting their plight. Struggling to raise their two young children alone, Begum insists that her husband is innocent and that the charges against him are baseless.
She emphasized the family’s financial difficulties, stating that they are unable to afford legal representation or cover their daily expenses. The emotional strain on their children has been overwhelming, and Begum continues to work tirelessly to support them. “Sohail calls home every week, maintaining his innocence and expressing his distress over being falsely implicated,” she said.
Begum has urged Dr. Jaishankar and the Indian Embassy in Kuwait to intervene, provide legal support, and facilitate Sohail’s release and safe return to India.
