Mumbai: Reliance Power Limited's subsidiary, Reliance NU Suntech Private Limited, has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for a groundbreaking 930 MW solar power project coupled with a 465 MW/1,860 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This project marks India's largest single installation of both solar energy and battery storage systems and is set to be one of the largest in Asia, outside of China.
The project will feature the largest deployment of grid storage batteries at a single site, offering significant benefits for India's power grid. By providing guaranteed peak power supply for four hours each day, the project will help reduce the need for distribution companies (DISCOMs) to purchase power from exchanges at high rates during peak demand hours, which can reach up to INR 10 per unit.
Reliance NU Suntech emerged as the winner of the competitive e-reverse auction conducted by SECI on December 9, 2024. The tender involved a total of 2,000 MW of solar power projects connected to the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS), with an additional 1,000 MW/4,000 MWh of battery storage capacity. Reliance NU Suntech secured the largest share, with a 930 MW solar allocation and a mandatory 465 MW/1,860 MWh energy storage system.
The project’s technological advancements in solar power and energy storage are expected to make renewable energy more cost-effective and reliable. Under the terms of the agreement, SECI will enter into a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Reliance NU Suntech, with the solar energy generated being sold to multiple DISCOMs across India.
Reliance NU Suntech will develop, own, and operate the project, underscoring its leadership in India’s renewable energy sector. The project is a significant step forward in India's transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
