Second-Year MBBS Student Found Dead by Suicide at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar
A second-year MBBS student, Ratnesh Kumar Mishra (21), was found dead by suicide at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, according to police reports on Thursday. Mishra, a resident of Dibrugarh, Assam, was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room on Wednesday.
Police suspect that a financial crisis in his family may have driven Mishra to take his life. Before the incident, he reportedly sent an audio message to his younger brother, asking him not to let their father sell their land and advising him to become a doctor but remain in Assam. A note found in his room stated that no one was responsible for his death.
Mishra had returned to the campus on Tuesday after a 10-day vacation with his father, who had accompanied him to Bhubaneswar. His second-year examinations were set to begin on Thursday. Mishra and his father had planned to visit the temple town of Puri on Wednesday, but he was later found dead in his hostel room, where his father had been unable to reach him by phone.
After repeated calls went unanswered, his father and some students broke into his room, finding the door locked from the inside. They discovered Mishra’s body, and he was rushed to the hospital’s Emergency Room, where he was declared dead.
AIIMS-Bhubaneswar Director Ashutosh Biswas later visited the hostel room. The Khandagiri police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated an investigation into the incident.
