New Delhi, 16th December 2024: Hindustan Zinc Limited (NSE: HINDZINC), the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer, has announced significant energy savings of over 0.8 million Gigajoules (GJ) in FY24, enough to power around 70,000 Indian households for a year. The announcement came on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day, as the company continues to lead in energy efficiency and sustainability.
The company also revealed the expansion of its renewable power delivery agreement (PDA) to 530 MW, increasing its renewable energy contribution to over 70% of its total power requirement by 2026. Hindustan Zinc’s commitment to responsible manufacturing includes a focus on innovative energy-efficiency projects, such as revamping turbines in its captive power plants, improving cellhouse efficiency, and shifting from high-speed diesel to piped natural gas. These initiatives have helped reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, aligning with the company’s sustainability goals.
The company has already made strides in reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity, achieving a 14% reduction in FY24 compared to the 2020 baseline while increasing production. Hindustan Zinc also began utilizing renewable power in the production of EcoZen, Asia’s first low-carbon ‘green’ zinc.
Ms. Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, emphasized the company’s alignment of sustainable practices with business growth, stating, “Our energy and climate action initiatives are aimed at creating long-term value for all our stakeholders while contributing to a healthier planet.”
In line with National Energy Conservation Day, Hindustan Zinc observed a ‘No Vehicle Day’ across its business units, promoting the use of public transportation, electric vehicles, and cycling to reduce energy consumption and minimize automobile pollution. The company also organized a week-long celebration with activities such as earth hour, energy conservation training, and competitions to increase awareness about optimizing energy usage.
Hindustan Zinc has been recognized as the world’s most sustainable company in the metals and mining sector by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023.
