Woman publicly humiliated over loan repayment in Telangana

Hyderabad: A woman in Telangana’s Jangaon district was publicly humiliated by officials from the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) on Sunday, January 26, for failing to repay a loan.

The incident occurred when SERP officials visited the residence of Guguloth Lakshmi, a resident of Pedatanda village under Devaruppala mandal, and demanded repayment. Lakshmi had taken a loan through a self-help group under Telangana Grameena Bank and reportedly owed Rs 61,000.

A video circulating on social media shows officials pressuring her to repay the amount. According to an official, acting on the district collector’s orders, SERP field officers, bank officials, and other authorities visited the homes of loan defaulters.

It was reported that around 30 officials, including SERP field officers, arrived at Lakshmi’s house, demanding an immediate payment of Rs 10,000 and insisting that the remaining Rs 51,000 be cleared by January 28. The official stated that if she failed to pay, SERP officials would return and stage a sit-in in front of her house until the loan was repaid.

The official further mentioned that their next step would be to visit Rajanna’s house and follow the same approach. “We will not leave until the loan is repaid,” the official asserted.
