Traffic to be restricted in Rohtang tunnel
Shimla, Dec 17 (UNI) Traffic will be restricted in the Atal Rohtang Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh for two-and-a-half hours every Monday and Thursday to clean the tunnel.
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) conveyed this to the Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti administrations.
NHAI Assistant Engineer Shivam Mishra informed the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti about the need to restrict movement of vehicles.
"Maintenance of Atal tunnel is of paramount importance... Due to increase in the movement of vehicles through Atal tunnel, present maintenance schedule time is insufficient to carry out proper cleaning," Mishra said.
He said that from December 20, on every Monday and Thursday, traffic movement will be curtailed from 0700 to 930 hours. Vehicles will be allowed only in emergency.
Currently, a thick sheet of black ice has formed at the entry points to the tunnel due to freezing temperature.
