Hyderabad: Villagers in Chadmal Thanda, Gandhari mandal, discovered counterfeit ₹500 notes among the offerings at the Lashamamma temple following the annual Sankranti festival. The fake currency was found in bundles collected from the temple *hundi,* with estimates placing the total value at around ₹1 crore.
The issue came to light when borrowers, who had taken loans from the temple committee at low-interest rates, identified three to four counterfeit notes within their bundles. They promptly alerted the committee, which then reported the matter to the police.
The Lashamamma temple serves as a central hub for Sankranti celebrations and receives substantial donations from devotees for its development. The discovery of fake currency has sparked concerns among villagers and authorities.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that several individuals have been detained for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. This incident follows a similar case in the Banswada division, where law enforcement officials recently seized counterfeit currency worth ₹60 lakh and arrested multiple suspects.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious currency transactions to prevent the circulation of fake notes in the region.
