Telangana: Differently-Abled Individuals Protest, Demand Separate Department

Hyderabad: Differently-abled individuals from Mothe Mandal in Suryapet district staged a protest on Tuesday, January 7, demanding the Congress government implement its election promise of creating a separate welfare department for the differently-abled.

Expressing frustration over the failure to recognize the disabled welfare department as a distinct entity, despite the Congress government completing a year in power, protesters gathered in Burkacharla. In a symbolic act, they held knives to their necks, urging the state government to fulfill its promise rather than “cut their throats,” referencing a popular Telugu saying about broken promises.

When Telangana was formed, the disabled welfare department operated separately. However, during the first term of the BRS government, it was merged with the Women and Child Welfare Department, losing its distinct status. Since then, the differently-abled community has been advocating for the restoration of the department’s original form.

The protest was organized by Gidde Rajesh, state president of the Indian Disabled Rights Protection Committee, along with other community leaders.
